Sylvia Beach Hotel Snapshots

View onto Nye Beach from the Mark Twain room.

Edgar Allen Poe room. I wouldn't want to sleep under this blade! There's a raven on the dresser (out of the photo).

The Dr. Suess room -- one of the more colorful rooms at the hotel.

Tennessee Williams room.

Venice in the Winter

We took a short trip to Venice at the beginning of January. I couldn't believe that streets in the center of town were still crammed with tourists! My advice: don't try visiting in the summer.

Around Athens

This little girl and her Grandma had such fun feeding the pigeons. A nearby vendor was selling bags of old bread crumbs and the number of pigeons got to be a bit scary, I must say.

Photo Blogging--From Two Continents

Brandon lives in Burundi and Leah lives in Vancouver. They've never met (except in cyberspace), but decided to start a photoblog: Leah Meets Brandon. For the next 12 months, they'll take pictures of their daily lives according to a monthly theme and post several times a week.

If you know me at all, you know that I love photographs and I love Burundi--so this is an irresistible combination! I'm curious to see what happens with Leah and Brandon's blog over the course of a year.

Garmisch Scenes

A few fall scenes from last week in Garmisch. Jeff had to work at the Marshall Center, so I drove down and spent a few nights with him. We celebrated our 26th anniversary last week too!

The Cathedral

Up the Mosel

A few photos from a drive up the Mosel River valley several weeks ago:

We ran into a group of American bicyclists who were cruising the river on a barge and taking day trips ashore. They were mostly in their late sixties and seventies, it appeared--all of them fitted out in spandex gear and cycling shoes. Hope I'm as energetic at that age.

For lunch, we followed a Rick Steves suggestion, and ate at Restaurant Haus Lipmann in Beilstein. Wonderful mushroom soup and an even better view of the water!

The grapes were just ripening, and I couldn't resist plucking one or two (or more). Still plenty left for the wineries and the birds.

ps. Click on the top photo, it's got lots of detail--that's the town of Cochem.

Oregon Coast Photos

Last Sunday, I drove Anna and her friend Amy to Newport, where we visited the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Yellow jellyfish make great abstract art!

It was fun peering up at the fish in water tunnels overhead, too. Felt a bit like being under the sea, which I'm sure is the effect the architects aimed for.

The freaky car gave us all a few moments of amusement. Note the pairing of one of the seven dwarfs with a rubber duckie and a praying nun, not to mention several decapitated dolls' heads with wind-blown hair and unnaturally red lips.

Wonder how many traffic accidents this car causes, when people do double-takes? Must be fun to drive around town.

Out & About

Yesterday, all of Germany abandoned their homes for green areas, at least in our region. No wonder, after the sun deprivation of these last few months. I did the same, walking around the nearby town of Speyer with several friends.

Snippets of Arizona

A few snippets from Arizona, land of spiky plants and desert rock:

Arizona has a whole different type of terrain than either Oregon, Burundi, or Germany--places where I've spent the most time.
