My sister Beth just started a blog. She included this photo in her first post--that's me with glasses, blue dress, and tropical fruit as hair adornment, Beth with the second pineapple, Susan (youngest) in white, and Dan sitting at our feet in the pineapple patch.
Hmmm. I'm thinking the four of us need to take another fruit or vegetable-themed picture together as adults. Maybe this time with radish earrings and papaya decor. Any suggestions?

I think you should just add some more fruit and dress up as Carmen Miranda. (Although you might not remember her since you weren't in the States in the 70's. She used to sing Latin songs and wore funny hats and sometimes had an entire bowl of fruit on her head!)
You had such a unique childhood. I hope the joys were greater than the sadness. I love this photo and I am glad you posted it.My children love Afica, but know it only through me and our friends who visit us from South Africa. My oldest (age 11) wants to go to the Congo and see mountain gorillas for Spring Break next year. He dreams big, doesn't he?
Betsy -- I do remember Carmen Miranda! Nice idea. The four of us could compete to see who balanced the most fruit at once. Although, knowing us, it might degenerate into a food fight...
Judy -- Yes, the joys of growing up in Africa were definitely greater than any sadness! I hope I end up communicating that on my blog. Tell your 11 year old that my brother and his family hiked to see the mountain gorillas when they lived in Rwanda. Hope he gets to someday!
You can't go wrong with a banana in your ear!
