Columbia Gorge Day Trip

Jeff and I drove up Columbia River Gorge on the fourth of July with our son David, his wife Emily, and Emily's father. Ellie came along too. We visited pFriem Brewery in Hood River for lunch and dogs had to wait outside, so we took turns sitting with her.

Everyone enjoyed their food and beer, and pFriem's near a river front park, so we caught glimpses of kite sails skimming past and kids climbing rocks. Quite a fun day!

Along with the coast, Columbia Gorge is my other favorite spot in the Pacific NW. Jeff and I didn't get the chance to visit Crown Point and the Women's Forum Lookout this time, but I plan to go back to take photos soon. We tried to drive to Crown Point, but a small-town 4th of July parade was due to begin and roads would've closed down. Next time.

More news: We sold our house in May (yay!) and are living in an apartment until our new home is ready in Ridgefield, WA. Ridgefield's 15 minutes north of Vancouver, so not too far away. Once the house is done, take a road trip and come visit!

Congratulations!

Our son, David, graduated from Calvin College on May 23rd with his biology degree. He plans to stay in Michigan and work for the next year.

Here, David with Grandma and Grandpa Cutter, who've driven cross-country to each of their grandchildren's graduations. The Cutters still have one grandchild left to go (our youngest, who won't be out of college for six more years). At least they get a breather in between.

Keep Those Eyes Open!

David flew in from Grand Rapids this morning, and is fighting to keep his eyes open just one more hour. He arrived bearing gifts: Rich and Creamy Rainbow Chip Frosting for Danielle (can't find it here) and a pair of Anna's favorite jeans from the States.

Now if I can only find a way to keep him awake a little longer. Jet lag won't be so bad then.

Pineapple Hair Fixings

My sister Beth just started a blog. She included this photo in her first post--that's me with glasses, blue dress, and tropical fruit as hair adornment, Beth with the second pineapple, Susan (youngest) in white, and Dan sitting at our feet in the pineapple patch.

Hmmm. I'm thinking the four of us need to take another fruit or vegetable-themed picture together as adults. Maybe this time with radish earrings and papaya decor. Any suggestions?

Happy 80th, Data!

I'm sure one of the reasons I love to read is because my father and mother spent time with me paging through many picture books and sounding out words. This picture was taken in Belgium, I believe--Dad was studying tropical medicine in preparation for his doctor work in Burundi.

In addition, both Dad and Mom took French classes while in Belgium. He told me the other day that he still remembers a sentence the French teacher said aloud to test their comprehension: Le soleil brille. Neither of them had any clue what she'd just said!

Another thing I loved to do with Dad:

Happy birthday, Dad! I do have to say, I don't remember a day when you were without a beard, but these pictures are proof of a prior time...

* Data = Father in Kirundi, the language of Burundi
* Le soleil brille. = The sun shines.

Mom and Me

This is one of my favorite photos. Gives me a peaceful feeling every time I look at it.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY, MOM.

Anna Turns Fifteen

I know it sounds cliche, but I can't believe our youngest is fifteen...
Happy 15th, Anna! I like spending time with you, even when you talk my ear off. And I love you more than infinity.

A Mother's Heart

It does a mother's heart good to know her son was well taken care of on his birthday.

Have a Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all of you!

See if you can read the sign on the wall next to Anna (click on photo for a closer view). We took a trip to Tunisia over Christmas.
David flies back to Grand Rapids on January 2nd. It's been fun rubbing elbows and getting chummy as a family again.

Oh, in other breaking news--Danielle's appointed to a Peace Corps position in Romania, teaching English to middle and secondary-schoolers. If the rest of her papers go through fine, she departs mid-May for training in the States, and then to somewhere in Romania. Have any of you visited or lived there?

Here's a family picture, now that we're all five together. It's taken in Carthage, which I never realized belonged to Tunisia. Piles and piles of Roman ruins all around the country.

Red Beets & Pickled Eggs

Today I'm eating red beets in honor of my mother. Or, more specifically, rote bete--gekocht und geschalt, sliced in neat little rounds. Beets always make me think of Mom, along with pickled eggs, because she often had them in the fridge when I was growing up. Now I'm seeing how many of Mom's special food-loves are particular to Germany, at least this southern region. Hmmm...coincidence? No, I doubt it, since many of her roots are here! But I never made the connection before. Also, sour cherries were high on Mom's list, especially in a sour cherry pie baked with cherries fresh off our backyard tree on Clinton street. Yum! And guess what, I've seen more sour cherry items in the grocery stores here than I ever found back in the States. Sauerkirsche jam, for example. Bliss, poured over vanilla ice cream.

What foods make me think of my father? A big bowl of ice cream, with milk on top (sort of a cereal bowl type of shake). Doesn't matter what flavour (correct me if I'm wrong, Dad). When we lived in Africa, one of the best treats we could have was home-made ice cream, turned and turned forever, the ice and salt eventually freezing the cream mix inside a metal cylinder. Dad usually took charge of the entire operation, and we all got a chance at the crank. I think we often had a circle of bemused Burundians watching, wondering what these crazy Americans were up to. As far as other foods, brownies and cookies never failed to please him. Come to think of it, any type of sweet! I do remember at Christmas, once Dad built up a medical practice in Oregon, he and Mom sent out packs of almonds--cheddar flavor, smoke flavor, plain salted--to other doctors, nurses, and assorted friends and family. Dad put aside a pack or two for the family, and he snacked on those as long as they lasted, which wasn't long with four children constantly snatching tastes.

Well, the beets just took me down this trail of reminiscing. Interesting, the place to which a simple root vegetable can lead the memory.

David's turn

One thing my son David enjoyed about living in Europe this past year--all the public sculptures and gorgeous architecture. You see David in this photo, but can you find another person (besides the obvious bearded stone man)?

Sisters forever

A pic of Anna and Danielle, spending time together on a hot summer's day in Rome
