Weihnachtsmarkt Time

Once again, it's Christmas market time in Germany. Heidelberg has a few different markets along the Hauptstrasse, all offering Glühwein (hot spiced wine), waffles dusted with powdered sugar, pork steak and onion sandwiches, deep fried potato pancakes topped with berries and cream, crepes, and many other food offerings. As you can see, most of them won't improve your chloresterol count...except for the Kräuter Bonbons (herb candy), that is.
Anna said that when we move back to the States (whenever that is...) she's going to miss these Christmas markets. So will I--they're better than glitzy malls and flashing lights everywhere. Portland's Saturday Market is the closest I've seen in the U.S.

I love those cobblestone streets best of all! Thanks for the book recommendation in the previous post. Sounds like an interesting read.

I love the Gebrannte Mandeln!!! Do they have those in your Christmas market or is that a local thing? They roast almonds in some sort of butter and sugar coating and it's positively addictive!

I forgot about the almonds. Absolutely the best. Wonder if they're easy to make at home? But eating them out in the chilly air is part of the charm.

Ruth at Body Soul and Spirit referenced your blog on Christmas markets. In one week, we leave central PA in the US for two weeks with our daughter in London, UK. She lives near a large market, and I am looking forward to seeing it.
Here in central PA all the emphasis is on summer markets and faires--I wish someone would get the Christmas idea. Very much the same thing, just a different time of year.

Your market is much larger than the one in our city and it would be great to visit it. The Christmas market is one of my favourite seasonal events. It is such a change from the "Walmart" shopping experience!!

I really like your blog, and your photos. I've copied (and credited) your ♥ shaped Ich Liebe Dich candies, to send to my (German0 boyfriend - I hope that it okay with you?
Thank you! Jessica
