This phrase popped into my mind yesterday. I can almost hear Mom's lilting voice telling me, "Laurie, bless your heart and gizzard!" when she was especially tickled about something I'd done or said.
I wonder where this saying originated. Any thoughts?

We said it growing up, but my children thought it might have just been our family
