Ice Box

My daughter's friend, Lizzie, rides a school bus daily from town to her American school on base. Each morning, now that the weather's turned warm, the German bus driver greets all the kids as they file into his air-conditioned bus -- "Vell-come to the Ice Box!" in a thick Bavarian accent. Anna and I have had fun intoning those words at odd moments of the day. I think maybe we're amusing ourselves a bit too much. Can someone send us a new phrase to obsess over?

A guy in Istanbul did his best to let him shine my shoes the other day. When I began to walk away he said, "Please -- don't break my heart." Ginger and I have been throwing that one back and forth for awhile.

I'll swap you.

Peace,
Milton

We had an insane Schwabian realtor showing us houses last month. And she would describe everything as we went along-- even if no explanation was needed!

A couple of times she swanned into nondescript bathrooms and launched into:

"Und here you have zee toilet, zee tiles..."

We've been pulling that out at random moments as well. Still cracks me up...

Wow, it's hard to match the earlier comments. I can't possibly do the phrases from where I grew up (Malaysia) in writing; you'd have to hear the accent. But I did enjoy hearing the Finns play with English when I lived there. One pastor who drove an old beat-up Volvo delighted in chuckling over a phrase he'd made up: "B-M-Double-YOU: Volvo trouble ME."

Okay, maybe it doesn't do well in writing either...
